How a Pair of Flip Flops Saved my Summer
I live in the northeast and I HATE the cold weather. I love being active, but only when it’s decent out. So when Spring rolls around, I want to exercise outside as much as possible. This year that almost was rendered impossible.
I am a casual jogger who waits for the weather to turn pleasant before starting up my outdoor fitness routine. So, right after the clocks sprung forward in March, I dug up my beloved, old (really really old) running shoes from the back of my closet and started out.
Well, let’s just say these old shoes had seen better days.
The material around the Achilles had broken down over the winter and was scratching me so badly that I couldn’t really run. I had to throw them away. In the interim, before I was able to get out to buy a new pair of running shoes, I used a pair of “fashion” sneakers – built for style – not for running. Seemed like a good idea at the time.
Big Mistake = Plantar Fasciitis
I started experiencing some minor heel pain. I attributed this to just starting out for the season and not being full jogging shape (and to being another year older.)
Unfortunately, the pain just kept getting worse and worse. But, instead of resting my sore foot, I tried working through the pain. No pain, no gain, right? (Duh).
I finally got a new pair of expensive running shoes. That was definitely going to solve the problem, right? Wrong. It only got worse. It was so bad that I was having trouble walking. I developed a sort of limping shuffle – like a 90-year-old lady.
I eventually found out that I had given myself a full-blown case of Plantar Fasciitis (self-inflicted no less).
Plantar fasciitis is an inflammation of the plantar fascia ligament that runs from your heel to the base of your toes. It’s the bowstring-type ligament that supports your arches. Factors such as age, too much standing, certain exercises and improper footwear (all of which applied to me) cause microscopic tears in the tissue.
This all results in the signature stabbing pain in heel – just like a knife. Ouch!
I started talking to my friends and coworkers – most of them middle-aged like me – and it seemed like nearly everyone had suffered from it at some point. Some of them have chronic, near-debilitating cases.
As with any ligament or tendon damage, it takes a long time to heal because there is very little blood flow – unlike muscles.
Anyway, It was the beginning of the summer and my much-anticipated jogging season was over already.
Shoe Shopping to the Rescue
Flashback six months – I was vacationing in Orlando with my husband. While enjoying a little retail therapy at the shops at Disney Springs one afternoon, we went into Fit2Run to check out the latest gear for casual joggers like ourselves. We picked up a few things including a pair of Oofos flip-flops for myself.
The flip-flops felt great. They are very cushiony and have a pronounced arch support. But my main reason for getting them was because they looked cooler than most flip-flops and because they had the look of patent leather. They actually seemed kind of dressy. I could get away with wearing these pretty much everywhere including the fancy restaurant we were heading to that evening. I am all about comfortable footwear!!
I never imaged what a huge part of my life these flip-flops would become!
After I messed up my foot so bad that I could hardly walk, I started trying all my shoes on to see which ones alleviated my discomfort.
Out of an entire closet of shoes, I found exactly one pair that I could walk in without experiencing terrible pain. You guessed it – the Oofos sandals!! Not only could I walk in them, I could actually power-walk in them for long distances, totally pain-free and, believe it or not, blister free! I have pretty much lived in my Oofos for the last four months while my foot heals.
These flip-flops would save my entire Summer and Fall!! Without them, I would have been stuck inside during the best parts of the whole year, exercising to my tired old workout DVDs (Buns of Steel!).

Oofos were developed as recovery footwear for marathon runners. The soft, shock-absorbing soles were designed to support and cradle your feet while relieving stress on your ankles, knees, and hips. They may not have been designed specifically for plantar fasciitis, but it sure seems that way.
I got IMMEDIATE relief from the pain the instant I slipped them on. I also became so excited because I knew that I would be able to have a relatively normal summer.
I basically wore those black flip flops all day – every day.
While I still have my original dressy pair that I save for special occasions, I have purchased several other pairs in different colors to go with all my dresses, jeans, shorts, and swimsuits.
I lived in Oofos for 4 months. I walked, biked and hiked in them.
I tried buying special arch supports into some of my other shoes with varying degrees of success. But nothing was as magically relieving as Oofos. I urge anybody who is having this terrible foot condition to try them out as soon as possible.
I have become a sort of evangelist for Oofos!
It is early September now and I feel I’m about 95% recovered. I didn’t want to take a chance jogging this late in the season, but I have tested myself out, and I’m pain-free.
The weather is changing now and I don’t know how much longer I can wear flip-flops without freezing off my toes! My foot is much better but still not 100% perfect so I think it’s time for me to order a pair of Oofos clogs for winter.
